Samantha Peszek Honored at Statehouse Ceremony!

September 19, 2008 by kimcarpenter · Leave a Comment

Gov. Mitch Daniels said athletes who represented Indiana at last month’s Beijing Olympics have become role models.

They’re starting to see what he was talking about. It’s not just the autograph signings and public appearances, either.

Pittsboro gymnast Bridget Sloan, 16, said younger kids are asking her for advice. Indianapolis diver Thomas Finchum, 18, is mentoring divers in his training group.

“I definitely feel like I am a role model,” Finchum said. “I felt that since even when I was younger. I’ve had divers look up to me.

“And now I have other people, as an Olympian, looking up to me. I feel that’s a role I’m ready to take, and I’m hoping to lead a good example.”

Eight Indiana Olympians, all 20 or younger, were honored Thursday at a Statehouse ceremony. Soccer player Lauren Cheney, 20, Indianapolis, wore her gold medal. Sloan and Samantha Peszek, 16, McCordsville, wore their silver medals.

Also in attendance were divers David Boudia, 19, Noblesville; Ariel Rittenhouse, 17, Indianapolis; Haley Ishimatsu, 16, Indianapolis, and Mary Beth Dunnichay, 15, Elwood. They were joined by U.S. coaches John Wingfield and Wenbo Chen.

Dunnichay had her own cheering section of students from Oakland Elementary School in Elwood.

Daniels said the self-discipline and work ethic shown by the athletes is rare at any age.

“But to find it in those so young is an inspiration,” he said.

All of the Olympians have resumed competition or training.

Cheney was given a week off by her UCLA coach but is to play for the No. 2 Bruins in today’s soccer game against Miami (Fla.) at Los Angeles.

Boudia, a Purdue freshman, said he began training right after traveling from Beijing because he was eager to be with new college teammates.

Peszek was in San Diego last weekend to tape a television special with the same gymnasts set to embark on a nationwide tour. She and Sloan are to appear in the Tour of Gymnastics Superstars show Nov. 11 at Conseco Fieldhouse, and Peszek plans to perform in five other cities.

Finchum took time off to go water skiing on Lake Monroe and parasailing in Florida. He was surprised that at least 20 people recognized him and asked for autographs or photos at Saturday’s Kenny Chesney concert in Lucas Oil Stadium.

This week, it was back to life as an Olympic athlete.

“We’re putting in a lot of hours and putting in a lot of hard conditioning,” Finchum said. “My body hurts to walk right now.”
